Can you judge a wine’s quality based on how quickly the bottle is emptied? I mean; it must be the best grade a wine can receive right? But then again, you could be mean and say it [...]

The season starts around mid-April and ends on the 24th of June. Spargelsaison. The Germans are crazy about their asparagus but I’m wondering if the Austrians isn’t taking it even a step further? Don’t get me wrong. [...]

I haven’t. Chosen side. Should I go for the guys who follows the phases of the moon, the biodynamics, or should I stick to the empirical track and what we know, we know? Perhaps [...]

There was a time when single vineyard wines were the thing and everyone had to be in on the race. But not all wines benefit from being bottled as a unique site; the blend should [...]
2011. The end of the world for some, or at least one guy who predicted a day in May to be the final call for all of us. When failing to calculate the judgement day it was revised to the 21st of October. Again, nothing happened. Sorry to break the news Harold, but the world [...]

Once an important Jewish community. Deutschkreutz. After the expulsion, ordered by the Emperor Leopold I, ended in 1671, many Jews settled again in the Hungarian kingdom. The village of Deutschkreutz, back then named Németkeresztúr, became a haven for Jews. But then, after the world [...]
“I’m bloody interested what you will think of that Kadarka! Expect a never experienced (OK, most likely never) aroma profile and no tannins at all!”
“Ok, so like a Gamay maybe?”
“Hm-hm, not even that. But you will see; just let me know your thoughts afterwards.”
New discoveries. That’s what it is all about here, [...]

Holy shmoly! This is sweet. I mean really, really sweet. But you know what? I kinda like it. No, I love it!
Vin Santo. A wine perhaps mostly associated with Tuscany. Did you know there was a Greek one as well? While tasting my [...]

Some are blessed with the ability to write, some with an eye for photography. I’m not sure I belong to any of the groups but I do know I love an inspiring post and a good photo. For me, those sites are what I [...]

When I sum it all up – the year of 2011 – I already know Giuseppe Russo will be a part of my A-Z list. Not only due to his passion and commitment when it comes to Etna, but just as much [...]
Why not follow Wine Virtuosity on Facebook? And while there, give my other wine site a like as well, Mad about Madeira!
Perricone started the Sicilian wine adventures. No, no, it wont end it as well. It’s just been too long since it was allowed to shine, so here goes again!
You know, [...]
16 wines from Sicily made it this year. Tre bicchieri in Gambero Rosso. 11 reds, 2 whites and 3 sweet wines. That is impressive, no matter what you think about the guide. Amongst the three glasses awards, there was a wine few had tasted before – or even heard of; the 2009 A’ Puddara.
[...]
The volcano man; that’s me. I guess I have no-one but myself to blame. If you’re a fan of Madeira wine, Etna and Santorini, one kind of merits the epithet. Thus, no surprise when I was asked to conduct an Etna tasting!
The Nerello Mascalese based wines of Etna can hardly be placed in the [...]
“Urknall,” Alfred says. “You know, the start of universe, the big bang theory.”
“This is the German word for it, Urknall.”
The surroundings are just dreamlike. We’re sitting in a saint-like memorial place just outside Horitschon, an oasis in the middle of a vineyard. In one corner there’s a statue. Maybe the [...]
200 years. That’s impressive. Impressive for a family business. You see, family owned companies normally have a life cycle way below 200 years. Heck, even 20 or 30 years are impressive for a family run company. Not Blandy’s though. They’re celebrating John Blandy’s founding of the company in 1811, by putting the 7th generation of [...]
“My wine is made in the vineyard.”
Finally I’m meeting the man behind so many of Portugal’s great white wines. Reds as well. I’ve followed Anselmo for some years by now and I can’t recall I’ve bumped into any disappointments. It’s an odd feeling. I haven’t met him but feel I’ve learnt to know the [...]
Ingmar Bergman once said “I hope I never get so old I get religious.” I’m not there yet. Heck, I’m only 38. But that doesn’t stop me from becoming emotional from time to time. To look back and remember.
It’s a fine Sunday in the beginning of August. Sweden at its best. Me [...]
Greece’s most famous wine region? Hardly a million dollar question considering there’s no correct answer, but likely it would end up in a battle between Santorini and Nemea, where the lava island probably would stand as the “winner” in the end. However, this post is all about the region of Nemea in Peloponnese, one of [...]
I’m at my second Himmelreich. Vineyard visit that is. However, the Donnerskirchen site is not as well-known as the German counterpart in Mosel. At least not yet.
It’s a beautiful morning. Hot already. Leaving Rust and the liquid gold, the primary goal is now what I’ve mostly looked forward to; Blaufränkisch. The Himmelreich site is [...]
Theoretically I have no problems understanding the choice of Rhone varietals only. Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache. And Rousanne of course. The varietals are well-known for their ability to master heat. But anyone who’s visited Crete during summertime have experienced the heat which is even more extreme than in the Rhone Valley. Vatolakos, a bit southwest [...]
Marathefriko. Marathefriko. M a r a t h e f r i k o. My Greek wine voyage leads me to Cyprus as well and new grape discoveries. While tasting the 2004 Barba Yiannis from Vouni Panayias, I am once again reminded I will remain a wine virtuoso apprentice for the rest of my life. [...]
“Mmmmm…this is good! I like it a lot. Sweet plums and licorice.”
The Greek terroir hunt continues. Discovering and learning about Greek wines has so far been this year’s eye opener for me. Never would I have thought Cephalonia could produce such great wines as the Robola and Eclipse from Gentilini. Or that [...]
It offers such great food and wine pairings. Yet we, most of the time, drink it at the wrong occasions. Here’s to Champagne – a walk-through the wines of Louis Casters – all paired with food!
A middle-sized family owned business with eight hectares of vineyards. The rest of the grapes are bought in from [...]
Wine is bottled poetry said Robert Louis Stevenson. Perhaps a bit too kind of him. Lots of crap out there. However; Etna is bottled poetry. At least if you ask me. The wines are ethereal, floral and sometimes both hard to explain to a newcomer as to an experienced taster. You will hear comparisons with [...]
Mail in. Michael tells me Kathryn will be in town next week. Will you join us to taste the 2009′s and check status on some older vintages? Response sent nanoseconds after receiving the invitation. Too keen you think? I know; I’m not good at acting as a wine critique. Hmm, when is it? Where? OK, [...]
Blind tastings. What’s it good for? Is it just for the ego and a way to boost the self-confidence when nailing a wine? Or perhaps a need to separate the good tasters from the great? A sort of worshipping for wine geeks. Some would argue blind tastings makes no-one happy. Why compare wine? Is there [...]
Better say this right away. The 2008 Cometa from Planeta will not be held a stellar wine by all wine consumers. It’s quite demanding and may also be seen as controversial by some. Others will totally fall for the Fiano and get that silly looking face saying ‘I’m in love.’ At first, I don’t [...]
Let’s stop right here. Weekly reflections of a wine lover? Last post was in January. Who am I trying to convince? From now on it’s irregular reflections of a wine lover and I have no clue when #63 will be posted. Since my last reflections, my two blogs have moved from the blogspot world [...]
I really disapprove with movements such as ABC – Anything But Chardonnay. Thankfully this reaction that started around a decade ago is not mentioned particularly anymore but still, you just can’t make it go away like that. Don’t you think a considerable amount of the end-consumers, which cares and shows interest in wine, still remembers? [...]
WELCOME
Me? A wine virtuoso? Don't think so. I'm rather an apprentice despite my 18 years of intense wine passion. But I kinda like the name - Wine Virtuosity. I'm glad you found my site, a merge of my two previous blogs. My name is Niklas Jorgensen. Here you will find it all; classic wine regions, new discoveries and some wine mumbo jumbo in general. I don't care about a wine's origin; as long as it captures my attention no more is needed. Trying to act as unprejudiced as possible, I still am aware of which are my weak spots. At least at the moment because who knows what awaits around the corner? By the way; don't forget to check out my Madeira wine site as well!TWIT, TWIT, TWEET!
